Forest Tunes - The Library, 1995-2009.., multi media ongoing installation |
Forest Tunes – The Library 1995-2009 – An international travelling exhibition and a book, begun in 1995 and still ongoing, has to do with daylighting the processes set in motion by human beings every day, for the most part hidden, related to the most burning ecological issues in the world, such as the loss of biodiversity, the deforestation, and global warming. The project also aims, among other things, to give a ‘face’ to natural entities referred to as the Genius Loci (sense of place). see introduction to the book.

Stream reclamation as an artwork:
In my quests for visual expressions which would bring man and the environment closer together I have conceived of a reclamation plan which operates concurrently on the physical level – cleansing the stream, and on the social and spiritual level – healing people from their environmental indifference.

Shai Zakai
Armors etc.
Forgotten memories, used to be raw materials and will become once again...
The Objects at the show, used to be trees in the forest, and turned into daily used objects for Man. The exhibition is an invitation to allow the objects to become raw material again, to return back to the woods where they were formed.
Shai Zakai presents details from The Armors’ series, which are made from organic materials in places where environmental destruction was made, or lack of awareness has happened. ( Cement Dress, The Vale Goddess - palm leaves found in the garbage, 200 years' old oak turned into a wine barrel, and more) .
Old furniture from Zakai's childhood, lost their grace, and have no demand, begin their long journey in terms of nature-time, to recollect their lost identity, on their way back into their native environment. The furniture are released slowly from their function.
They look like sculptures, composed from memory pieces from the biography of themselves. They can stand at the vineyard, at your living-room, alongside familiar pieces of other furniture..
With these leaves' covered furniture, the artist continues her investigation of deforestation issues and departs from her childhood objects on their journey..
Her former project, which was shown at the Engel Gallery, included some 120 boxes of leaves in an installation which included a video-art – ‘Genius Loci’, and an inventory of the fallen leaves, collected from around the world for 9 years. Nature in Boxes, for future generation. A distant memory.
